Preparing Your Septic Tank System for Winter

Posted on December 9, 2021

It’s critical that you protect your septic tank through the winter months. As the temperature drops, so too will the bacterial activity that is needed to carry out the wastewater treatment process. If your septic tank is not adequately protected, the bacteria will become dormant and your septic tank may not function correctly.

Don’t make a mess of your Christmas — follow these tips to ensure your septic tank stays healthy through the cold.

Inspection

The winter period is the perfect time to carry out an inspection on your septic tank. Check the various components to ensure none of them are showing any signs of significant wear. You should also ensure that the water supply lines and flexible hoses are sufficiently drained. Draining all the water lines will ensure the pipes don’t freeze as the temperature drops.

Insulation

Keeping your septic tank insulated over the colder months will be the best way to prevent any issues. There are many ways to insulate your septic tank:

  • Avoid cutting the grass

A layer of grass surrounding your septic tank will act as a natural layer of insulation. Combined with its ability to capture snow, grass can prevent your septic tank from freezing. You don’t need to do much here — just avoid cutting the grass over the soil treatment area during the winter period.

  • Add an insulation board

An insulation board can be placed on top and along the sides of the septic tank before you start backfilling. You might also wish to wrap a flexible insulation material around extensions to ensure proper insulation of risers.

  • Use a septic tank lid

Some septic tank systems come equipped with pre-insulated lids that will help to stop the inside of the tank from freezing. If you don’t have a pre-insulated lid with your septic tank, contact your plant manufacturer — they might be able to provide you with one.

  • Spray-on insulation

A quick option is to use a spray-on insulation at seal points. This handy tool will ensure that cold air is not trapped in the septic system, which could otherwise lead to water distribution pipes becoming frozen.
