The hotter temperatures that the summer months bring results in a huge spike in all of our water consumption. Whether it’s washing the car, filling a paddling pool or keeping your lawn watered, there are many ways we’re using much more water than we should.
To help you keep your water consumption as low as possible, the team here at Wildon UK have put together this outline of some top summer water saving tips.
Chose the right time to water your lawn
It would be best if you held off watering your lawn altogether, if possible, but, if needs must, plan to water your lawn in the early morning or evening when it is cooler out. This will reduce the amount of water lost from evaporation in the hotter weather and allow you to use less water for the same task.
You should also try to avoid watering your lawn on windy days as this is likely to waste a lot of water as it is blown off course, hitting the pavement or driveway instead.
Set up your sprinklers correctly
If you want to make sure you are using your sprinklers economically, you need to ensure you set them up correctly. You will need to locate them central in your lawn, and ensure their settings are limited to only cover the area of grass you need, rather than overreaching and wasting water on pavements or concrete.
Get a rain barrel
By setting up a rain barrel under the guttering outside your home you can collect up to four gallons of water a day. This water can be used to water the plants, keep the lawn fresh and wash the car at a later date, saving you from having to run fresh, clean water for unnecessary purposes.
Purchase a pistol grip for your hose
When it comes to watering your lawn or washing your car, it can be easy to waste a lot of water by simply allowing your hose pipe to run when you don’t need it. Having to return to the tap every time you aren’t using the hose can seem very time consuming and a lot of effort for a very short break in water use, so it is very common for gallons of water to be wasted in this way. Purchasing a pistol grip, otherwise known as a squeeze nozzle, allows you easier control over the flow of water from your hose, enabling you to cut the water supply when you don’t need it and reducing your water waste.
Following these simple tips can go a long way in conserving a precious resource and reducing water wastage.
